30 Years of Rebuilding

This year marks 30 years since the start of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda, and this is a poignant moment for the nation and for our ministry. Today, we rejoice over how the fruits of Africa New Life’s efforts are appearing throughout our nation, even as we acknowledge the painful reasons for Africa New Life’s founding in the aftermath of the genocide all those years ago. In this tension of joy and sorrow, we look with gratitude to the good things God is doing this year in Rwanda and to the ways He is using YOUR support to change lives and rebuild a nation!

As the writer of Lamentations wrote, “You came near when I called you and said, ‘Do not fear.’ You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life” (Lam. 3:57-58, NIV).Taking up Rwanda’s case, our gracious God has used those who serve Him, like you, to redeem lives in Rwanda through acts of compassion and the Good News of Jesus. And He is not done! Join the redemption story of Rwanda today with a gift to the Impact Fund, Africa New Life’s general fund.

Despite the wounds in Rwanda’s past, today we witness redemptive hope in the eyes of those we serve.

DR. FRED SEBASHOKA’S STORY

In Rwanda’s ongoing redemption story, Africa New Life’s impact is visible through the stories of formerly sponsored students who are now adults. These students, raised in the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, faced bleak prospects and limited dreams. Their parents were often forced to choose between paying school fees or providing food and feared their children faced a life of poverty. Africa New Life came alongside this generation in 2001, and now many have emerged as Rwanda’s proof that beauty can arise from the ashes. Through their successes, we glimpse the transformative power of education, compassion, and opportunity. Fred, a boy from one of Rwanda’s poorest communities, is one example.

WEAVING PEACE AND REDEMPTION

Duhumurizanye Iwacu Rwanda is an organization focusing on community-based therapy in Bugesera and Gatsibo District in the Eastern province of Rwanda. In English, its name translates to “comfort each other in one’s neighborhood.”

Rwanda’s tragic past has profoundly impacted the women in the program who receive counseling to overcome their trauma. Together, the women form a community while receiving counseling and training in farming and basket-weaving, which provides a source of income for their families.

As a special opportunity for you this spring, set up a monthly gift of $10 or more to Africa New Life’s Impact Fund today, and receive a beautiful peace basket woven by the women of Duhumurizanye Iwacu Rwanda! (Colors will vary.)
