You and I may not take bathrooms very seriously. But in developing countries like Rwanda, sanitary bathrooms are a luxury.

1.8 million children around the world die from diseases caused by inadequate sanitation each year. Millions more suffer from poor health and cannot work or attend school.

In Rwanda, most children use primitive latrines that can cause preventable life-threatening diseases such as bacterial diarrhea, malaria and cholera.

By providing safe water, sanitation and hygiene education, the number of diarrhea-related deaths are reduced by about 65 percent.

  
     
   
     

There are three steps to sanitation-related disease prevention:

1. People need access to safe water.

2. People need basic hygiene education

3. People need proper sanitation facilities

Already people are helping to solve the sanitation crisis in Rwanda!  Nearly 1,000 children in Rwanda now receive safe water at the Africa New Life school they attend.  This summer, water distribution centers will be built throughout Rwanda, and thousands more will enjoy safe water!  And, hygiene education is an important component of Africa New Life’s programs, as well.

Without proper sanitation facilities, though, many Rwandans are still at risk.
