ABOUT THE Dream Beauty Academy
Rwandan women above the poverty line spend a large part of their discretionary income on hairdressing and other cosmetology services; salons in Rwanda pay hairstylists well. The Dream Beauty Academy was started with the intention of training impoverished women with skills that would allow them to start a career in the beauty industry and better provide for their families.
The Dream Beauty Academy is a non-profit cosmetology school in Kigali, Rwanda, at Africa New Life Ministries’ Dream Center. The school opened in 2012 as a partnership between Africa New Life and The Academy of Hair Design in Springfield, MO. Students attend classes which take them through hair braiding, cutting, styling, and coloring, as well as learning to do manicures and pedicures. A steady stream of local clients gives them the practice to hone their skills.
Women who excel in this training are able to work in or open their own salons. With support from donors, women who have met the requirements of the program receive a beauty kit at graduation, helping to launch their new career.
Through additional donations, the academy’s founders want to continue this mission, to help more Rwandan women attend cosmetology classes and have successful careers in the thriving beauty industry.
